Algorithm

An algorithm is a formula for carrying out a precisely determined sequence of simple, unambiguous steps, especially calculations. Algorithms are used to solve complicated problems or to generate codes or other values. Algorithms are used to generate coding sequences in file compression and encryption programs and to generate the aliases for file mapping. Algorithms are used by TCP to measure traffic patterns to route files via the least busy links and to generate hash tables.
